27 paychecks in a year: which years and what it means
A year is 52 weeks and 1 day (2 days in a leap year). That spare day adds up: about every 11 years your biweekly payday lands on January 1 or 2 and the calendar fits 27 paydays instead of 26.

The math
365 ÷ 14 = 26.07, so most years fit 26 paydays with one or two days to spare. Those spare days carry forward. After 13 or so years of carrying forward a day (two in leap years), they add up to a whole 14-day period, and that year gets 27 paydays. If your first payday of the year falls on January 1 (January 1 or 2 in a leap year), the calendar fits 27. A holiday can also create one: when a January 1 payday is paid early on December 31, that check counts in the earlier year.
What 27 paychecks means if you're salaried
Employers handle it one of two ways, so ask payroll:
| Method | Each check | Annual pay |
|---|---|---|
| Divide salary by 26 (most common) | Normal size | You get one extra check: about 3.8% more that year |
| Divide salary by 27 | About 3.7% smaller | Same annual salary, spread thinner |
Example on a $60,000 salary: ÷26 = $2,307.69 per check, so 27 checks total $62,307.69. ÷27 = $2,222.22 per check, $85 less every check, $60,000 total. If your checks are going to shrink, budget for it from the first payday of the year.
Hourly workers
If you're paid hourly, nothing changes per check: you're paid for hours worked. A 27-paycheck year just means the year's 14-day periods line up so one more payday falls inside it.
Budget the extra check
A 27-paycheck year has three 3-paycheck months instead of two. Treat all three extra checks as savings or debt money; see what to do with the third paycheck.

Frequently asked questions
Is 2026 a 27-paycheck year?
For Friday biweekly pay starting January 2, 2026, yes, if the January 1, 2027 holiday paycheck is paid on December 31, 2026. Other schedules have 26.
Does a 27th paycheck mean a raise?
Only if your employer divides your salary by 26. If it divides by 27, each check is smaller and your yearly salary is unchanged.
Does a 27th paycheck affect my 401(k) or benefits?
Per-paycheck deductions (like a fixed 401(k) amount or insurance premiums) may be taken 27 times. Check whether that pushes you past a contribution limit.
