How many paychecks are in a year?

By Cooper Digital · Updated October 15, 2026 · 3 min read

The number depends on how often you're paid. Here's the full comparison, plus the part most people miss: how many checks you get in a typical month, which is what your budget actually runs on.

Quick answerWeekly: 52 (sometimes 53). Biweekly (every two weeks): 26 (sometimes 27). Semimonthly (twice a month): 24. Monthly: 12.

Weekly52 (sometimes 53)4.334 months with 5 checks
Biweekly (every 2 weeks)26 (sometimes 27)2.172 months with 3 checks
Semimonthly (twice a month)242None

Biweekly: 26 checks but only 24 "budget" checks

Biweekly pay means two checks in ten months and three in two months. If you budget each month on two checks, you have planned for 24. The other two arrive in 3-paycheck months and are unassigned money. That's why biweekly is great for saving, as long as you know which months they fall in. Use the 3-paycheck month finder.

Weekly: plan on four

Weekly pay means four checks most months and five in four months each year. Budget on four and treat the fifth as extra.

Semimonthly: the easiest to match to bills

Two checks every month on fixed dates (often the 15th and the last business day). The weekday moves around, but the count never changes. See biweekly vs semimonthly.
