What to do with your third paycheck

By Cooper Digital · Updated October 15, 2026 · 3 min read

If your budget runs on two paychecks a month, the third check in a 3-paycheck month is the only paycheck of the month with nothing assigned to it. Twice a year, that's a full paycheck you can aim at one goal.

Quick answerDecide before it arrives. A good order: (1) cover any bill that's behind, (2) build a starter emergency fund, (3) pay down high-interest debt, (4) fund sinking funds, (5) get a month ahead on bills, (6) invest.

The decision order

#UseDo this if…
1Catch up on late billsAnything is past due or in collections
2Starter emergency fundYou have less than $1,000 (or one paycheck) saved
3High-interest debtYou carry credit card or payday loan balances
4Sinking fundsHolidays, car repairs or annual bills keep surprising you
5Get one month aheadYou want to pay this month's bills from last month's income
6Retirement / investingDebt is under control and you have 3+ months saved
7A planned treatEverything above is on track; spend a slice guilt-free

Worked example: two extra checks of $1,850

OptionWhat $3,700 a year does
Credit card at 24% APRPaying $3,700 toward a $5,000 balance saves roughly $800–$900 in interest over the following year versus minimum payments
Emergency fundGoes from $0 to about two months of rent for many renters
Sinking fundsFully pre-pays $800 holidays, $900 car repairs, a $720 insurance premium and a $1,200 trip
Get a month aheadTwo extra checks cover most of a month of bills, so payday timing stops mattering

"Getting a month ahead" explained

Instead of paying bills from the paycheck that just arrived, you park every check in savings and pay next month's bills from last month's income. The two extra checks a year are the easiest way to build that one-month cushion without cutting spending.

Frequently asked questions

Should I save or pay off debt with the third paycheck?

If you have no emergency savings, save a starter cushion first so the next emergency does not go on a card. After that, high-interest debt usually wins.

Is the third paycheck really extra money?

Only if your monthly budget is built on two paychecks. If you already spend 2.17 checks a month on average, the third check is already spent.

Can I use it to get ahead on bills?

Yes. Paying next month's bills early with the extra check is one of the best ways to stop living paycheck to paycheck.
