Biweekly budget template: what a good one includes
Most "biweekly budget templates" are monthly budgets with two columns. A real biweekly template is organized around paydays, because that's when your money arrives.
The 6 parts
| Part | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Paycheck rows (26) | Your budget runs on paydays, not months |
| Bill list with due days | Lets the template work out which check pays what |
| Bill-to-paycheck matching | Shows the heavy check before it happens |
| Savings per check | Pay yourself first, every time |
| Spending log by date | Keeps "left to spend" honest |
| 3-paycheck month flags | Plans the two extra checks a year |
A free layout you can copy
Create these columns in any spreadsheet and add one row per payday:
| Payday | Covers through | Take-home | Bills due | Savings | Spent | Left |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fri Oct 9 | Thu Oct 22 | $2,150 | $387 | $150 | $118 | $1,495 |
| Fri Oct 23 | Thu Nov 5 | $2,150 | $1,753 | $150 | $0 | $247 |
"Bills due" = sum of bills whose due date falls between the payday and the day before the next payday. In a spreadsheet that's a SUMPRODUCT across your bill list; or work it out by hand with the bill splitter.
Excel or Google Sheets?
Both work. Google Sheets is free and on your phone; Excel is faster with large spending logs. Many Etsy templates are Google-Sheets-only, so check before buying. Our kit is one file that works in both.
Free vs paid templates
A free layout like the one above is enough if you're comfortable with formulas. A paid template saves setup time and handles the tricky parts automatically (bill matching, holiday-moved paydays, 3-paycheck flags).
Common template mistakes
- Monthly rows only: hides which paycheck is short.
- Hard-coded paydays: breaks every year; good templates calculate paydays from one start date.
- No bill due days: without them, bill-to-paycheck matching is impossible.
- No place for irregular expenses: add sinking funds so annual bills don't wreck a paycheck.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a free biweekly budget template?
Yes, the column layout on this page is free to copy into any spreadsheet. The free paycheck bill splitter also works without a spreadsheet.
Does a biweekly template work in Google Sheets?
Yes, as long as it uses standard formulas. Avoid templates built on Excel-only features if you want to use Sheets.
How many rows do I need?
26 for a year of biweekly pay, 27 in a 27-paycheck year.
